France offers some of the widest and most varied terrain in Europe, based around the extensive ski area of the Three Valleys and L'Espace Killy. The Three Valleys is one of the largest ski areas in the world, with pistes covering more than 600 kilometres linked by 200 ski lifts. Popular resorts in the Three Valleys include Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thorens. Alternatively, the ski area of L'Espace Killy boasts 137 pistes, two snow parks, and two halfpipes connected by 97 lifts. Popular resorts in L'Espace Killy include Val d'Isere and Tignes. Nestled at the foot of the mighty Mont Blanc, Chamonix features 162 kilometres of piste, with a huge range of superb runs, excellent off-piste, three snow parks, and some of the best freeriding in Europe. Chamonix also boasts one of the highest cable cars in Europe, at 3842 metres. The resort of Les Menuires is set at 1850 and is the largest ski area in the world, offering 600 kilometres of piste connected by 200 lifts, and is also popular with snow boarders for its three snow parks. Advanced skiers will enjoy the black runs and excellent off-piste at La Masse. The world famous ski resort of Val d'Isere, along with nearby Tignes, forms part of the Espace Killy Ski Area, and features 300 kilometres of varied piste, 52 kilometres of cross-country, and a superb snow record. Val d'Isere is characterised by its charming alpine chalets and high rugged mountains. The highest ski resort in Europe, Val Thorens sits at 2300 metres, and is best suited to beginners and intermediates for its range of blue and red runs. Expert skiers will enjoy the heli skiing, the challenging moguls, and off piste on the glaciers.
