Austria boasts some of the prettiest ski resorts in the world, with its picture-perfect Tyrolean villages, idyllic chocolate-box houses, and attractive tree-lined slopes. Skiing in Austria features extensive, high altitude pistes suitable for all levels, from beginners to experts, as well as snow parks, half pipes, and jumps for boarders. Ski holidays in Austria often centre round the ski resorts of Kaprun, Zell am See, Hinterglemm and Saalbach. The traditional Austrian village of Kaprun features 130 kilometres of pistes - many set at 2500 metres, 18 kilometres of cross-country trails, a snow park for snow boarders, and the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. The lakeside resort of Zell am See combines a pretty old town centre, a variety of challenging terrain, pretty tree-lined slopes and warm, welcoming mountain restaurants. The ski area of Saalbach-Hinterglemm is one of the largest lift-linked resorts in Austria, boasting 200 kilometres of runs. While the resort of Saalbach offers traditional Austrian charm, Hingerglemm features more modern buildings. Expert skiers may find this ski area a little dull, but beginners and intermediates will be in their element. The good ski school and nursery slopes are particularly popular with beginner skiers and boarders. The area also boasts 11 kilometres of cross-country skiing. Snow boarders are fond of Saalbach-Hingerglemm for its 13 kilometres of boarders-only runs, a snow park and half pipe.
