"The most beautiful place that human eyes have ever seen" is how Columbus described the Dominican Republic when he landed here in 1492, and for very good reason. Holidays in the Dominican Republic combine an untamed landscape of mountain ranges marbled with rivers, waterfalls and lakes, fields of coffee, tobacco and sugar cane, and a tropical paradise of white-sand beaches fringed with coconut palms and lapped by turquoise waters.
Tourists flock in their droves to the Amber Coast, on the north side of the country, for its beautiful beaches. Those who can tear themselves away from the beach can take a trip into Santo Domingo - the Dominican Republic's principal city. Domingo's attractions include the Calle de la Damas - the oldest street in the new world. The city also boasts numerous fine food restaurants. A visit to the island is complete without tasting their famous 'Pate Palo' dish.
Evenings are spent sipping cocktails at beach bars, enjoying street parties in Santo Domingo, or dancing into the early hours at the resorts' wealth of nightclubs. Another favourite pastime is gambling. The Dominican Republic is home to 31 casinos, the largest of which is Hispaniola Hotel & Casino in Santiago, offering complete Vegas-style action and ambiance.
