Cala Blanca
The resort of Cala Blanca is set on the west coast of the island, two miles from Ciudadela and 30 miles from the capital, Mahon. Cala Blanca has expanded outwards from the beach and now merges with the neighbouring resort of Santandria. Holidays in Cala Blanca are based around the resort's two small beaches. The sheltered sandy coves are packed with fine golden sand, which gently shelves into the sea, making it a popular destination for families.
A variety of water sports are also available on both beaches. During the summer months however, this stretch of sand has a tendency to become rather overcrowded due to its close proximity to Ciutadella. Those who want a break from sun bathing can browse the shops, bars and cafes in the pedestrianised Maribel area of town. Accommodation is largely made up of self-catering apartments and luxury villas, but there are also a few hotels.
Public transport in the area is good - a mini train runs to all areas of the resort throughout the day and regular buses link neighbouring resorts along the coast. The nearby historic town of Ciudadela is well worth a visit, with its maze of narrow streets and pretty harbour. Evenings are relatively low-key with a few bars offering live music and a disco at Santandria, but the majority of evening entertainment centres round the hotels.
